Our Story: Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.

The seed of Derusha House of Comfort was planted not in a boardroom or committee, but in the quiet corridors of St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, New Jersey. There, among the beeping machines, whispered prayers, and final goodbyes, a call was heard not just to ease physical suffering, but to restore spiritual dignity to those nearing the end of life.

A Ministry Born in the Margins

The early days were not glamorous. There were no buildings, budgets, or brochures just hospital visitor passes, handwritten prayers, and the unmistakable presence of the Holy Spirit in hospital rooms where patients felt forgotten by the world but deeply remembered by God.

Many patients were alone. Some were estranged from families. Others were burdened by guilt, fear, or spiritual questions no one dared to ask out loud. In those moments, Derusha’s founders realized something sacred was happening:
A need not just for hospice care but for holy comfort.

Inspired by Isaiah 62:12 and Isaiah 49:15 which says:

“And they shall call them The Holy People, The Redeemed of the LORD; and you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.”

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the child she has borne? Even if these forget, yet I will not forget you.”

…a name and a mission emerged. Derusha, Hebrew for “sought out” became more than a title. It was a divine identity. These were not forgotten souls. They were God’s beloved. A city not forsaken.

From One Room to a Vision

What started with bedside prayers and raw conversations became a movement one that could no longer be contained within four walls. Derusha House of Comfort was officially born: a nonprofit ministry dedicated to providing spiritual, emotional, and practical support to the suffering, the marginalized, and the “least of these.”

The vision has grown to include:

  • Comfort Branch: Ongoing hospice chaplaincy, hospital visits, spiritual crisis care
  • Outreach Branch: Food, clothing, and resources for the under served
  • Restoration: Ministry training, volunteer programs
